Sound Engineering, a team with a proven track record in stadium sound
systems, was called in. Their challenge: to design a full-range sound
system with the kick to carry an announcer's voice above the roar of the
crowd and with the agility to play music. Here's how they tackled the
problem.
They
put together a front line of powerful speakers. Sixty thousand watts of
power. Ninety-six speakers in all. To house the speakers, FSEC used AutoCAD®
and designed a steel chamber the size of a tractor trailer. Everything fit
together according to plan, with just six inches to spare. Assembled, the
loudspeakers and housing weighed over ten thousand pounds. It all
had to be hoisted 90 feet up and installed above the scoreboard.
That was the first quarter of a four-phase project. Then, to achieve
deeper coverage, special horn speakers were installed in the stadium
overhang. To guard against electrical interference, FSEC installed a
separate AC power supply. Future goals include modernizing the
distribution system to network feeds and revamping the press-box audio
system.
At
FSEC, we're proud of our design team. After all, not many teams make it to
the Orange Bowl.
